Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or queries that aren’t listed here!

When is the best time to get my pet scanned?

Dogs and cats can be scanned from 28 days post mating. When to scan is a personal choice, depending on what you want to get from the scan. At 28 days post mating you will see pregnancy sacs, this will confirm pregnancy. The further along the pregnancy you perform a scan the more you will see, for example at around 35 days you can see the formations of a puppy, by 45 days you can see the skeleton, get a clear heart beat and see the puppies moving.
If you're wanting other species such as rabbits, goats and sheep etc scanned please get in touch so we can discuss the best time to scan.

Can you tell me how many?

Ultrasound cannot be used to give a definite number for multiple reasons. Due to the shape of canine and feline uterus, when pregnant the foetuses can obscure one another. In the early stages of pregnancy prior to the skeleton forming, reabsorption can also occur.I am happy to give you an estimate for example between 4-6, more than 6, or a singleton. The only accurate way to determine numbers is by X-ray once skeletons are formed, but this is not advisable.

What are the benefits of pregnancy ultrasound?

Pregnancy ultrasound in our beloved pets can be very beneficial, it is far less invasive than palpitations and X-ray. You can get confirmation of pregnancy so you are able to prepare for offspring or carry on as normal. Viability of pregnancy is also seen in watching the puppies move and heartbeats.

Will my pet need their fur clipped?

In short, no. There is no need to to clip or shave the fur unless in exceptional circumstances such as a very very dirty/matted coat or a extremely dense coat, but this is very rare.

Is ultrasound harmful?

Ultrasound has a brilliant safety record when used correctly and safely. I have invested in a good veterinary quality machine and transducer suitable for the service i provide, it is inline with EU safety standards, i’ve also undergone all necessary training to be able to provide the services i do.

What happens if something’s wrong?

I am not a vet so i am unable to diagnose any illness. I can only confirm pregnancy.I will advise you to seek advice from your veterinarian should anything look different. If you are concerned about your pet, please always go straight to your vet.
